For one period, Arrowhead’s varsity girls hockey team skated well, outshooting rival Brookfield, 15-3. The rest of the way, things didn’t work out. The Warhawks slipped to 2-3 overall with a 3-2 overtime defeat Dec. 5.

“Aside from the first period we didn’t play well … we were overconfident. Relying on our talent isn’t going to be enough. The girls got away from playing as a team,” said Warhawks head girls hockey coach Andrew Smith. “Hard work is what’s needed for us to be successful.”

Junior forward Morgan Hobbs scored both goals for Arrowhead. Freshman forward Hannah Wilson, from Sussex Hamilton, had an assist.

Abbey Weisrock, a junior goalie, had 10 saves.

On Dec. 6 the Warhawks played their first-ever junior varsity game in program history. Despite the final outcome (8-0 loss against Janesville Rock County), Smith was encouraged the team can put numbers on the ice.

“It was cool to see because most of these girls are first or second-year players that have only skated on one or two shifts at the varsity level,” said Smith. “This season, we have 26 players, so it shows how the program has grown.”

Arrowhead has another junior varsity game planned on Dec. 9 at the Mullett Center against Fond du Lac. At 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 12, Arrowhead’s varsity will be forced to jump up in class when it hosts Bay Area, the state’s top-ranked team.
