Arrowhead skaters win third straight

After a slow start, Arrowhead’s boys hockey team is finally finding its stride.

The Warhawks, under first-year coach Josh Engel, won three games this week and have now won three in a row to improve to 5-6-0 on the season.

AHS will return to action Tuesday when it plays rival Waukesha in a key Classic 8 Conference game. Waukesha (8-3-1) leads the conference at 3-0-1. AHS stands at 2-2. Arrowhead will also host Oregon (3-6-1) on Friday.

“We’re finally starting to play pretty good hockey,” Engel said. “We’ve won three games in a row and are playing better at the start of games. For some reason, we’ve started slow in too many games this year. We’re getting better starts and then finishing. We’ve got a big game coming up Tuesday. Waukesha has a very good team.”

The Warhawks capped off the week on Saturday by defeating St. Mary’s Springs of Fond du Lac, 3-2.

Arrowhead fell behind 2-1 after the first period and then tied the score in the second period when Colin McBride scored a power play goal. Kylar Fenton and Dylan Cox had assists on that score.

AHS then won the game with the only goal of the final stanza. Cox fired in the game-winner, and Benji Dvorak had the assist.

In the first period, Trevor Kaucic scored for the Warhawks and Jon Daury had the assist.

“It was a nice win, seeing we fell behind 2-0 early in the game,” Engel said. “The guys did a good job of battling back. That’s something we haven’t been doing this year, Maybe this one will get us going.”

The week started with AHS downing Whitefish Bay, 4-2. From there, the Warhawks edged Milwaukee Marquette, 6-5, in overtime. Patrick Berges scored the game-winning goal as Matt Chomniak had the assist.

Earlier in the game, the Warhawks got goals from Jack Schlinsog, McBride, Fenton, Giuliano Norante and Chomniak. Collecting assists were Berger, McBride, Cox, Fenton, Zach Hopkins (2), Daury and Jaxson Carr.
