Four nights after losing a heartbreaking Classic 8 Conference game to visiting Waukesha by a 2-1 score, Arrowhead’s boys hockey team bouned back with a solid effort on Saturday by blanking visiting Oregon at the Mullett Ice Center, 4-0.

It marked the first shutout of the season for the Warhawks. Junior goalie JJ Gerlach faced 21 shots and rejected all of them.

“JJ had a really good game for us, obviously with our first shutout,” said AHS coach Josh Engel. “He made a couple of very good saves that kept them from scoring.”

Arrowhead did all of its scoring in the first two periods, getting two goals in each stanza.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for the improving Warhawks. On the season, AHS is now 6-8.

AHS will play two games this week. The Warhawks will play against host University School of Milwaukee (9-4-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a conference game and then play against host Fond du Lac (5-8-0) on Friday.

Senior Ben Dvorak, who finished with a pair of goals for AHS, scored the game winner at the 6:09 mark of the first period. Fellow senior Giuliano Norante had the assist.

Nine minutes later, the Warhawks struck again, this time getting a goal from senior John Sorenson. That goal came with just 2:40 left in the period. Sophomore Jack Schlinsog had the assist.

Both of the Arrowhead goals in the second period came on the power play. Schlinsog got the first one, with freshman Jaxson Carr and sophomore Elijah Tormala getting the assist. Dvorak got the final score with 17 seconds left to play as Jonathan Daury had the assist.

“A big key for us was to get that early 2-0 lead after the first period,” Engel said. “Once we got the lead, the kids did a nice job of sticking with the game plan. This was a nice win. But we’ve got nothing but tough games left the rest of the season.”
